South Yorkshire Probation Trust
With over 500 staff the Sheffield based South Yorkshire Probation Trust is one of 35 covering England and Wales. It holds a three year contract to provide offender management and intervention services within the Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley areas, and seeks to ensure that the public are protected and crime reduced. The Assessors found excellence to be a clear driver within the organisation, and staff loyalty and commitment plus a clear understanding of the needs of the different customer groups to be evident throughout. |

Parkway Green Housing Trust
Parkway Green Housing Trust is a charitable local housing company with 5,800 homes in Wythenshawe, Manchester. It employs about 170 people. Led by a volunteer board Parkway Green's vision is to provide quality homes and services, and safer neighbour-hoods. It has recently delivered a £90m, five year investment programme eighteen months ahead of target. The Assessors found an ethos and culture of quality service to customers, and noted that good progress has been made since current operations started in 2006. |

Established in 2000 Working Links seeks to reduce social exclusion, and is committed to community cohesion and the improvement of society. With strong, wide ranging and mutually beneficial partnerships Working Links has delivered, or is delivering, a range of government welfare schemes. Assessment confirmed the extent to which Working Links has integrated continuous improvement principles into everyday activities, and showed that the Executive Team are committed to business improvement and that there is an enthusiastic and positive atmosphere embedded in the organisation. |

During the course of both their off and on site investigations the Assessor Team found Merseyrail to have improving results in most areas and noted a number of good examples of Merseyrail improving their customers' experience. It was clear to the Assessors that Merseyrail encourage a balanced lifestyle for their people, and that their key partnerships are well established and effective. The Assessor Team also noted that that all stakeholders see clear evidence of strong leadership and constancy of purpose within Merseyrail. |

NORTH OF ENGLAND
BUSINESS OF THE YEAR 2011

Four years ago a special award was established to recognise the North of England Business of the Year. As part of their deliberations the Awards Jury therefore reviewed in some detail the assessments and scoring profiles for all of this year's Applicants. As a result of this review Merseyrail Electrics (2002) Ltd were identified as having the necessary wide ranging and well developed strengths against all nine Excellence Model criteria, and a deservedly high overall weighted score. The Jury were therefore pleased to make them the 2011 North of England Business of the Year. As the Assessor Team commented "We consider that Merseyrail has established large pockets of efficiency and excellence across all the EFQM Excellence Model criteria." |
